Concrete and slab removal · Broward County
Concrete and slab removal in Broward County
Concrete removal looks simple until the slab is thicker than expected, reinforced heavier than expected, or sitting on a water line nobody marked. Each of those changes the equipment, the trucking and the price.

Under most Broward slabs is fill over sand and porous limestone, with groundwater close below. Breaking out a footing can open a hole that fills with water. Removing a slab can leave soft fill that will not carry the next pour. We plan the depth of removal and the backfill together, so the subgrade (the ground the next slab sits on) is ready for what follows.
Weight drives the cost. Clean concrete generally goes to a recycler to be crushed into aggregate, while concrete mixed with soil, wood or trash goes to a disposal facility at a higher rate. We separate on site where we can, and the disposal plan is shown in the quote.
Driveways also sit partly in the public right-of-way. Removing an apron or a sidewalk section usually needs a right-of-way or engineering permit from the city, separate from any building permit. Tell us the area, the thickness if you know it, and what goes in next.
Order of work
- Measure the area and confirm what goes and what stays.
- Call Sunshine 811 and trace private lines.
- Pull any building or right-of-way permit the city requires.
- Saw-cut the edges that stay.
- Break, load and haul, separating clean concrete for recycling.
- Remove footings or base to the agreed depth.
- Backfill, compact and grade for the next use.
Where it goes wrong
What usually goes wrong, and how we control it
Buried lines
Water, irrigation, electrical and gas lines run under driveways and patios. Sunshine 811 locates its members’ public lines before breaking; private lines on your side of the meter are traced or exposed by hand.
Unknown thickness and reinforcement
A driveway can be four inches of plain concrete or eight inches with mesh and rebar. We test-break a section when it matters, so the equipment and the trucking match the slab.
Soft or wet subgrade
Removing concrete can expose wet sand, organic fill or voids. We stop, photograph and report it, then backfill with compacted fill where the scope calls for it so the next slab does not settle.
Cracks running into what stays
Breaking up to an edge that stays sends cracks back into it. Every edge that stays is saw-cut first.
The limits
Compaction testing, where the next structure needs it, is done by an independent testing lab. Utility relocations are done by the utility or a licensed trade. We do not assume what is under a slab until it is open.
Questions
About concrete and slab removal
Can you remove just part of my driveway or patio?
Yes. A straight saw-cut marks where the old concrete stops, so the section that stays keeps a clean edge for the new pour or for pavers.
Do I need a permit to remove a driveway in Broward?
Often, particularly when the work reaches the sidewalk or the swale in the right-of-way. Rules vary by city, so confirm with the city’s building or engineering department. We check it before pricing.
Where does the concrete go?
Clean concrete usually goes to a recycler and becomes aggregate. Mixed debris goes to a disposal facility. The disposal records are kept for your file.
What does a demolition cost?
Every job is quoted from a site visit, or from photos and drawings when that is enough to see the scope. The number depends on what the building is made of, its size and height, what the asbestos survey finds, which utilities must be disconnected, access for equipment, how close the neighbors are, what stays and what goes, and where the debris is hauled. We do not publish prices, because two jobs that look alike rarely are.
What size of job will you take on?
Any size. We quote one interior wall, a shed, a pool or a slab, and we quote a full building, including selective and structural demolition. Tell us what is there and what has to remain, and we will price the scope as described.
Is Romco Builders licensed?
Yes. Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale. Work that needs its own license, such as asbestos abatement, electrical disconnects or tree removal, is done by firms that hold that license, and we coordinate them under one schedule.
How a job runs
Six steps, in this order
Send the address and the scope
Call, or use the quote form with photos or drawings. Tell us what has to go and what has to stay.
We walk the site
We look at the structure, the utilities, access for equipment and trucks, and what sits next door.
Written scope and quote
The quote names what is removed, what is protected, what is hauled away, and what depends on survey results.
Surveys, permit and disconnects
Asbestos survey where required, utility disconnects, and the demolition permit from your city's building department.
Demolition and haul-off
Work follows the agreed sequence. Debris is hauled to permitted disposal facilities, with the load records kept.
Final inspection
The building department closes the permit. You get a clear site, or the shell you asked for.
