Pool removal in Broward County

The pool decision that matters is what stays in the ground. A partial fill-in leaves the shell buried; a full removal takes it out. Buyers, inspectors and future builders will ask which one you chose.

In a partial removal, the top of the wall is broken down, the floor is broken so water can drain through it, and the shell is filled and compacted. It costs less. But the buried shell stays part of the property’s history, and a future foundation over it usually needs an engineer’s attention. A full removal breaks out and hauls away the entire shell, then fills the hole in lifts, meaning thin layers compacted one at a time.

South Florida groundwater sits close to the surface, and it pushes up on an empty shell. Drain a pool too early and it can crack or lift out of the ground. So draining is timed with the break-out, and the water goes where the city allows rather than into the street drain by default.

Compaction is the part an owner cannot inspect later. Where the area will carry a structure, an independent testing lab can verify density lift by lift, and that report is worth keeping with the deed. Send the address and whether you plan to build over the pool, and we will price both options side by side.

Order of work

  1. Choose between full removal and partial fill-in, with what comes next in mind.
  2. Confirm the pool type and pull the permit with the city.
  3. Have pool electrical, gas and plumbing made safe by the licensed trades.
  4. Drain the pool where and when the city allows.
  5. Break out the shell, fully or partially, and haul the debris.
  6. Fill in compacted lifts, with testing where the scope calls for it.
  7. Grade and finish the area for sod, pavers or construction.

Where it goes wrong

What usually goes wrong, and how we control it

An empty shell lifting

Groundwater pressure can crack or float a drained pool. Draining is coordinated with the break-out so the shell is not left empty and exposed.

Unknown pool construction

Gunite, fiberglass and vinyl-lined pools come out differently, and older pools sometimes have thicker shells or buried decks. We confirm the construction before we price it.

Fill that settles into a dip

Loose fill dumped in one pass settles. Fill goes in compacted lifts, with density testing by an independent lab where the area will carry a slab or a structure.

Getting equipment to the backyard

Most Broward pools sit behind the house, with a fence, a screen enclosure or a seawall in the way. Access and protection for what stays are planned first, and the enclosure comes down before the pool if it is in the scope.

The limits

Pool electrical and gas disconnects are done by licensed electricians and gas contractors, and density testing by an independent lab. Whether and how to disclose a filled pool when you sell is a question for your real estate attorney.

Questions

About pool removal

Is a pool fill-in cheaper than full removal?

Usually, because less concrete is broken and hauled. The trade-off is what stays buried, which can matter to a buyer or a builder later. We price both so you can compare them.

Can I build where the pool was?

After a full removal with compacted, tested fill, the area is generally buildable, subject to your engineer. After a fill-in, expect the engineer to ask for more investigation or a different foundation.

Do I need a permit to remove a pool in Broward?

In most Broward cities, yes, and the city usually inspects the broken-out shell or the fill. Confirm the requirements with that city’s building department; we handle the application.

What does a demolition cost?

Every job is quoted from a site visit, or from photos and drawings when that is enough to see the scope. The number depends on what the building is made of, its size and height, what the asbestos survey finds, which utilities must be disconnected, access for equipment, how close the neighbors are, what stays and what goes, and where the debris is hauled. We do not publish prices, because two jobs that look alike rarely are.

What size of job will you take on?

Any size. We quote one interior wall, a shed, a pool or a slab, and we quote a full building, including selective and structural demolition. Tell us what is there and what has to remain, and we will price the scope as described.

Is Romco Builders licensed?

Yes. Romco Builders is a licensed Florida general contractor, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale. Work that needs its own license, such as asbestos abatement, electrical disconnects or tree removal, is done by firms that hold that license, and we coordinate them under one schedule.

How a job runs

Six steps, in this order

  1. Send the address and the scope

Call, or use the quote form with photos or drawings. Tell us what has to go and what has to stay.

  2. We walk the site

We look at the structure, the utilities, access for equipment and trucks, and what sits next door.

  3. Written scope and quote

The quote names what is removed, what is protected, what is hauled away, and what depends on survey results.

  4. Surveys, permit and disconnects

Asbestos survey where required, utility disconnects, and the demolition permit from your city's building department.

  5. Demolition and haul-off

Work follows the agreed sequence. Debris is hauled to permitted disposal facilities, with the load records kept.

  6. Final inspection

The building department closes the permit. You get a clear site, or the shell you asked for.
